I'm in the thick of my current book launch. I found this article extremely helpful. The clarity on distinguishing between the promotional versus paid is incredibly helpful. Thank you.

Thanks so much for the information on the different kinds of author visits. I think it rings true for authors here in Australia too. Though I don't know that bookstores organise any kind of school visits here – would you say that's quite common there?

I think it’s quite common here, though I don’t think they do it at the author’s request necessarily, more so if the author volunteers and it all lines up, if that makes sense? But I’d have to ask some of the bookstores to learn more! I do think they do them at publisher request.

That’s interesting. Bookstores host author events here but not in conjunction with schools (that I’m aware of). They’ll take place at the store itself or sometimes at a local library if more space is needed.

Yes! We have those bookstore events too, but also sometimes school visits. Interesting to hear how things are done in Australia!

Yes it’s all so interesting! Hearing how things work in other countries gives me ideas for what could be possible here too, so thank you for sharing!

This is a super helpful distinction Vicky, and perfect timing for me as I just finished a day of school visits that I'm realizing now would fall in that promotional bucket! I visited the elementary school my kids went to so I could develop and practice a program that I can use for paid visits, and they worked with a local bookstore to set up book sales. They didn't pay me, but the value for me was high because in addition to a lot of book sales, I could promote my new book, and the teachers knew I was still figuring this all out so they gave me a lot of valuable feedback. I'll also be asking for blurbs and recommendations. It's really helpful to me to have a way of categorizing this type of visit and to have you articulate how it's different from a paid visit! Thank you!

Informative article. Thanks, Vicky. If you're ever up for a Part II, I'd be interested to know about the communication and coordination of efforts with the publisher's marketing team (if any) when it comes to the promos you are arranging yourself.

Thanks, Sue! For things I am arranging myself, I typically just plow ahead and send my publicist an occasional laundry list of the things that I'm doing so that they know they are happening (and the amount of work I'm putting in!) If I need their support for something, I will ask for it, but I tend to not ask for much. Perhaps there's a longer post to be written, but that's the short answer!
