I write to learn more about our world through the discoveries I make as I put words onto the page. I’m interested in so many different subjects from Alcatraz to insects and I have turned those interests into several nonfiction books alongside my fiction titles. Plus, kids love nonfiction! According to this article, 80 percent of first-graders chose nonfiction when picking out books.

Types of Nonfiction

Let’s start our discussion of nonfiction with a look at the types of nonfiction books available in the market today.

Prolific nonfiction author, Melissa Stewart, describes five different types of nonfiction:

  1. Active nonfiction

  2. Browsable nonfiction

  3. Traditional nonfiction

  4. Expository nonfiction

  5. Narrative nonfiction.
