I’ve been feeling uninspired and unmotivated lately. Unmoored somewhat from my creativity. So with summer here I thought I’d check in on the goals I set at the start of the year and see how things are going. Am I on track? Do I need to add something? Take something away? Maybe this exercise will kick-start my creativity for the summer and beyond.
Here’s the post where Vicky and I discussed our goals for this year:
Setting goals for 2025
It’s time for goals! Every year, Christine and I set writing goals for ourselves. What about this year? How are we thinking about 2025?
How’s It Going?
My 2025 goals are going okay-ish…
Revise my middle grade novel and get it to the point it’s ready for my agent to see!
Oh sweet start-of-2025-Christine. She was so naive.
I’ve made some minor progress but I’ve largely stalled. In part because of goal 2 below but also because of my lack of motivation so far this year. Oh and also because of the puppy but she’s getting more chill and I can’t blame her anymore!Writing While Distracted
·If you subscribe to my author substack you’ll know that I got a new coworker last week who is very distracting. If you don’t, here she is!
I still want to complete this revision so I think this will be my main focus for the second half of the year. I need to split it down into smaller milestones and track my progress. I will report back at the end of the year!
Complete a to-be-announced project which is in a new category. I’m really excited about this one.
This is still unannounced but I did turn in my final manuscript! Fingers crossed I can tell you more about this soon as it’s so fun and I have a whole post planned about how it came about.Keep up with my new approach to my phone - I want to keep the apps off my phone and further reduce the time I spend on it. The result is hopefully even more writing and reading in 2025.
Hmmm well this is a mixed bag. I was doing pretty well but I reinstalled instagram recently and got sucked in and I’ve also found myself on Reddit way too much. It’s time to check in with myself and be honest about how much of a time suck these apps and websites are. This is a good mid-year reminder to reassess my phone usage especially with it being the summer and my kids watching me. 👀
New 2025 Goals
I have a picture book that I’m revising that I want to get finished ASAP.
Find a class on science fiction writing to help me with my middle grade.
I think both of those goals are pretty manageable.
How about you? Join in with me in the comments and let me know how your 2025 goals are going. And if you didn’t make any, it’s not too late to make some. We still have half a year to go!
Dive into the Kidlit Survival Guide Archives
Before you go, take a look at our archives. This time last year I was thinking about summer and how I would get work done with the kids at home. I need to re-read it myself and see what advice past-Christine has for me!
Summer Survival Guide
For me, summer means looser schedules, very little structure, and more family time. None of those are bad things. But when there are deadlines to meet, or a project calling for my attention, it can be hard to squeeze in creative work amongst all of the other things I have to do.
Oh Christine, I can't wait to hear about your new project.
Glad I’m not the only one having a hard time staying steady and productive. Happy summer!
